The Benefits of Fasting Food

My greatest testimony about the power and benefits of fasting comes from a situation that arose while I was still in prison and believing God to be free. I had been in prison for 28 years already, and I had been believing God for years to be released on a certain date, and a month before that date, here comes the devil.

I was approached by a staff member, who presented me with a whole list of charges that I had in another State. I was told this other State is coming to get me, and the date they gave me was the same date I was believing for to be free. I knew it was an attack on my faith. The devil always wants to present you with facts and get your eyes on what’s in front of you to derail your faith, But I am a child of God, and I walk by faith and not by sight.

I went into an immediate fast. I was not coming into agreement with that evil report I just heard. I knew the charges were real, but it was something that old man did, not be. I fasted for ten days and prayed the same prayer of faith three times a day, constantly reminding God of his promises. I was refusing to believe the evil report. I knew my God had all power and was able to free me according to my faith.

On the last day of that fast that same person that brought the evil report came back to my cell door. He said, “I think the records department made a mistake.” I was listening. He said, “you remember I told you of the charges you have in the other State and them reaching out saying they’re coming to get you, but now Records is asking me to ask you what would be your transportation home; do you have family coming to pick you up or would you need a bus ticket?”

I started to jump for joy in that cell. I was smiling ear to ear because I knew that that was no mistake but an answer to my fasting and praying. I broke my fast right then. I pulled all my duplex cookies and sodas out and had me a little feast in that cell. I gave it to God and God came through. However, the devil wasn’t through just yet.

A couple days before my date came, the same person again comes to my door and say they are pushing my date back ten days because the other State said they’re coming but they can’t make it just yet. They did this three times, pushing my date back ten days every time. On that last time, the Correctional Officer come to my door early in the morning to get me. I’m believing to be released on this date and they’re telling me the other State will be here on this date. When I get up front to the Records Office the lady handed me my bus ticket, had me sign my release papers, and I was escorted out of the prison that morning.

God is so amazing, but he wasn’t through just yet. As we enter the parking lot, the correctional officer that’s escorting me gets a call on his radio. He turns to me afterwards and say, “Wow, I’ve never seen this before. In all my years of moving inmates to and from the prison, they always travel in the back of the prison van.” I told him that I knew that to be true. Then he says in disbelief, “That was the warden that just called, and he told me to take you to the bus station in his brand-new pick-up truck, and he doesn’t allow anybody to touch his truck.” Ha! So, not only did I leave prison that day, but God had me leaving out first-class.

This is the power of fasting. I knew this wouldn’t have been possible without fasting, and I felt it in my spirit to fast. God wants us to have victory in every area of our lives, but we must stand our ground to receive the promises. The devil will fight us with the evil report, but don’t believe it.

So, what happened to those charges, let me tell you. God brought me out with those charges still on me. That’s right! He brought me out of prison with Supreme Court indictments still pending on me. Let me rephrase that so you can really understand what I’m saying. God had me released from prison with Charges pending on me that could've got me locked right back up. This is simply unheard of.

God knew I was in faith, and he rewarded me according to that faith. I went to court for those charges after my release, and the judge laughed those charges right out of the courtroom, but that’s another whole testimony right there.

Fasting food is a powerful tool the devil hopes we will never use, because he knows what those results can bring. Make fasting a part of your lifestyle. Yes, it’s hard, but you can do it. It will take discipline, but again, you, my friend, can do it. How do I know? Well, because the same Spirit God gave me, he also gave to you if you are a believer, and the Spirit will give you the grace to fast. You first must make the decision to do so.
